Body Doubling

The single most effective thing Gulley does differently — he stays present with you while you work, rather than directing from a distance or asking you to leave the room.

What is body doubling?

Body doubling is the practice of having another person present while you work. You’re not being supervised. You’re not being judged. The other person simply exists in the same space — and that presence provides enough external structure for many ADHD and autistic brains to start, stay on task, and finish.

It sounds simple. For many neurodivergent people, it’s transformative.

Why it works for ADHD

ADHD brains often need external structure to activate. On your own, starting a decluttering task can feel impossible — not because you don’t want to do it, but because your brain can’t generate the activation energy to begin. Another nervous system in the room provides that structure.

Research on body doubling consistently shows it reduces task initiation time and improves follow-through for people with ADHD. It’s not a trick — it’s working with your brain, not against it.

Why it works for autistic clients

Many autistic people find it easier to work alongside someone they trust than to work alone. A calm, predictable presence reduces anxiety. Gulley doesn’t push, doesn’t rush, and doesn’t impose a timeline. He creates a safe environment and follows your lead.

What this looks like in practice

Gulley arrives, you briefly discuss what you want to work on, and then you work. He might offer gentle prompts (“what do you want to do with this?”) but the decisions are always yours. He handles the physical — picking up, moving, sorting into piles — so your cognitive load stays low.

If you hit a wall, he notices and adjusts. If you need to stop, you stop. If you get into hyperfocus and want to keep going, he stays.

Most organisers ask you to leave the room. Gulley stays.

The conventional approach to professional organising asks clients to step back while the organiser works. This might feel efficient, but it removes your agency and can create shame (“someone else is dealing with my mess”). It also doesn’t build any systems you can maintain.

Gulley works with you. You make every decision. You understand every system. And you build the muscle of doing it — with support.

Ideal for

  • ADHD clients who struggle to start or sustain focus
  • Autistic clients who work better with a calm, consistent presence
  • Anyone who has tried to declutter alone and given up
